Dear Senator,
You have a chance to go down in history as a man of principle, but you seem to be letting it slip away. Senator Douglas, the Little Giant, stood with the will of the people and with his own principles to help defeat the heinous Lecompton Constitution, which would have inflicted a pro-slavery constitution upon the anti-slavery population of Kansas. Douglas had to stand against an administration of his own party, and the leadership of his own party in the Senate. He fought the good fight, won the victory, was re-elected to the Senate in 1858 (against Abraham Lincoln, no less), and secured an honorable place in history.
You have a similar opportunity today. You could stand for life (the great moral issue of our day) and secure both a very probable re-election and the admiration of future generations. Instead, you may find yourself in the American Betrayers Hall of Fame for betraying the people who trusted you and the very beliefs you claim to hold.
You have stood upon honorable ground, and defended it manfully. Do not surrender it now, by accepting a bribe of pork that will have to be paid by your constituents eventually anyway.
Turn back, Senator. Vote against cloture.
Sincerely,
Hermit and Mrs. Crab
