Now that the Foul Deed is Done...

There are a few lessons we need to take away from the Health Care Hostile Takeover disaster.

For anyone who still thought the Democrats the "party of the people", watching them jam through a huge, expensive, and very likely unworkable bill through against the wishes of a thumping majority of the population should clear the eyes of all but the willfully blind.  However, we had better keep reminding some of them, for their default position is ignorance, and they'll slip back into it if we let them.

Real pro-life Americans need to learn to never trust "pro-life" Democrats again.  These Democrats are politicians, and Democrat politicians at that.  They will never provide the margin of defeat for any abortion-friendly bill.  Stupak Iscariot's second betrayal surprised no-one who has studied the course of this debate.  He got himself a lot of attention, and then sold out when it suited him.  He's a Democrat of character, all right, but not good character.  The same goes for the rest of the flippers who followed their leader, let us hope off a cliff this fall.

There has been a lot of talk about huge Republican gains this fall, and they had better happen if we expect to minimize the damage from this night's foul work.  However, we had better not slip into complacency and just "let it happen" -- it may not.  We are going to have to get involved, and we are going to have to put our money where our beliefs are.  Don't ask yourself if you can afford to do it -- ask yourself if you can afford not to.  Now, I wouldn't presume to tell you where to send your political donations, but I would like to point out a few things.  Don't support third parties "to send the Republicans a lesson".  We need to use our resources to defeat the Obamaites now, not in some future election.  I think that to indulge in such thinking at this point in our history is, well, self-indulgent.  Some of us have forgotten the basic definition of patriotism, which is to do what is best for one's country.  Using our time, talents, and resources to throw the Democrats out of office while the damage they have done may remain reversible is what our country needs us to do now.  If you don't trust the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee to do what is best and brightest (a far more defensible position), then I suggest you send your donations to your own chosen candidates, or to Senator Jim DeMint's Senate Conservatives Fund.  Senator DeMint is a true conservative, and will only use your donations to support reliable conservative candidates for the Senate.

Of course, we're going to need more than people writing checks.  I have been revolving in my mind a return to local politics (not that anyone noticed that I was gone), and I really would rather not, but I think what's happening today forces my hand.  I'm going to see about joining my local Republican committee for a start, and I suggest it for you to, if you can.  If you don't like where the Republican Party is headed in your area, try putting yourself in a position to help steer it.  Carping from the galley can only do harm.

The Democrats gambled large that they could force this abomination (Obamanation?) on the country without getting massacred in November.  It is now our patriotic duty to make sure that what was gambled is lost.

I'd like to end on a little gallows humor:

I noticed that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, despite the fact that his approval numbers were falling as fast as the approval numbers for the HCHT, kept pushing this dreadful bill all the way to the end.  I can't decide whether this makes Harry the first Mormon suicide bomber or the first Mormon kamikaze pilot.

My wife of five years is convinced that I am a brilliant political prognosticator.  Every prediction I have made since the dawn of the Obama Error has come true.  I told her a week ago that Stupak would sell out at the last moment, and that that would put the bill "over the top".  In all modesty, predicting that took no brilliance.  After all, Stupak had done it once already.

Tony the Libertarian pointed out to me that Stupak spelled backwards is Kaputs.  Let us hope he is.

On a personal note, having this disaster occur on the birthday of my late brother was almost more than I could bear.  John was a liberal-leftist, as the term was understood in the 1960s (okay, he was a hippie).  Despite our political differences, I am sure that John would have opposed the HCHT, since he distrusted and despised the government.  Don't you miss the old days when leftists hated government?

Some day some brave author will write a book about the campaign of lies and distortions that was used to push this monstrosity (one imagines BO, as Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein, shouting "Give my creation life!") past the furious American people.  I suggest the title The Audacity of Cr*p.
